Edith's Dahlias

Today would have been Edith's 101st birthday. Her granddaughter Ashton wanted the day to feel like her: kind, generous, thoughtful, and full of flowers.

It started with two neighbors, Jill and Vonda, who had extra dahlias blooming in their gardens and happily shared them. Soon there were buckets brimming with orange, pink, red, and cream.

Ashton turned those buckets into ten bouquets. She placed a balloon right in the center of each one, then tied a bow and a tag around the neck of every vase. We called the project Edith's Dahlias.

Together with her parents, including her mom Chris, Edith's daughter, Ashton hand-delivered the vases to residents of the retirement community where Edith lived for ten years.

One lady was so excited about her bouquet that she tucked it into the storage compartment of her walker and went around showing the arrangement to all her friends. We think Edith would have loved that.

Afterward, Ashton visited her grandmother's grave and decorated it with dahlias, a little row of color for a woman who gave so much of it.

Edith fully embraced her German heritage and filled her days with kindness. She is missed and loved by her family, and today, her sunshine floated on. ๐Ÿ’›
